The award is named for a great Tree Farm Person, Doug Link. When we first got started on the State Committee Mr. Link was a great encourager and visited our property more than once. </span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">To receive this award was a great honor for her and me too!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">She definitely was well deserving of this award. She has spoken at the National Leadership Conference about encouraging more women to get involved in forestry through "Women's Walk in the Forest". She always helps with "Classroom in The Forest" for fifth graders on our property. Planting trees, cutting wood, prescribed burning and other management practices are some of her forestry experiences.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">So glad I get to share live with her!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEitc2rPwm84ZAePJT6pHZ-JYeryLSYDyR5XJrEYfMXJMUUWbUb9lmrgmqKbu1ydVxikzfVRLHxw5RlQ7dTeZ6zV-QmY4udMPu7M6GPnxqXmNlE31fgVOhclnCu9m8YvDDLaPG_339edD8T4Y47ZAZubFwc9HaxSevVbkvxofGOiLFb1X-amVlA-GG4g=s4128" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4128" data-original-width="3096" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEitc2rPwm84ZAePJT6pHZ-JYeryLSYDyR5XJrEYfMXJMUUWbUb9lmrgmqKbu1ydVxikzfVRLHxw5RlQ7dTeZ6zV-QmY4udMPu7M6GPnxqXmNlE31fgVOhclnCu9m8YvDDLaPG_339edD8T4Y47ZAZubFwc9HaxSevVbkvxofGOiLFb1X-amVlA-GG4g=s320" width="240" /></a></div>Dewberry Lands, LLChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01233315997918601875noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1574079207789227012.post-83566573063910830472021-09-09T10:00:00.002-05:002021-09-09T10:14:13.780-05:00Simply Southern TV Show<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTaMVH6ZoojVDpbSOkDKAxcyMVILsMHWg0y7U_gz2rjMQTvmg1AfZT2RDIRchPonXWdLeHhD_wZdDv8qJ63FfY8U551O8_-jyRCW-fuFfHbQjJIj36LwLcs-hIG5a5Dt8vyxHLm8vmnDk9/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="457" data-original-width="687" height="148" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTaMVH6ZoojVDpbSOkDKAxcyMVILsMHWg0y7U_gz2rjMQTvmg1AfZT2RDIRchPonXWdLeHhD_wZdDv8qJ63FfY8U551O8_-jyRCW-fuFfHbQjJIj36LwLcs-hIG5a5Dt8vyxHLm8vmnDk9/w222-h148/Logo.jpg" width="222" /></a></div><br />We were recently featured on the TV show <i>Simply Southern.<b> </b></i>It was broadcasted<b> </b>on local TV and on<b> RFDTV </b>network. You might ask "why"? It is illegal to have in your possession any part of eagle. Only Native Americans can have in their possession a feather and they are required to get a special permit from the US Government. $100,000 and a year in jail is the penalty for having an eagle feather. </div>Dewberry Lands, LLChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01233315997918601875noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1574079207789227012.post-73211513932638607412021-03-01T12:04:00.002-06:002021-03-01T12:04:24.840-06:00Timber prices/Lumber prices<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Back in late Spring we were informed by a friend that lives on this road where one tract of land we own is located. He told us about the fresh dumping and where it was located. My wife and I went to check on the property and saw several bags of garbage dumped on our property. With this much garbage you know they will not have all there private information deleted so we proceeded to check it out. In the garbage was their WIC receipt and their address was included on an envelope. It was a young mom that lived outside the county and I am sure someone dumped it for her. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My wife and I picked all the garbage up and disposed of it. We could have turned it over to authorities to handle the dumping but we chose to let it go.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Maybe they will do better in the future.</div>

Felicia was one of the speakers in a breakout session we had. She spoke about programs she had put together on our property for women to be more involved in the forest and forest management programs. These program were "Women's Walk in the Forest" and the "ForestHer" program developed by Dr. Becky Barlow, Auburn University. Felicia did a great job sharing with others attending.</div>

This year we have burned 75 acres. This stand has been thinned once and had never had fire in it. With all the rain we have had we were lucky to get this in but because the lower levels of the duff was still damp and this helped keep the roots cool when we burned.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Thanksgiving is about family. This weekend my youngest granddaughter wanted to go deer hunting with granddaddy. Well, when they want to go outdoors for what ever reason, you go. The night before we had to find her camo and an orange hat to wear for the next day We got up early and left with her older brother going also.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This was her first hunt and she was so excited to be going with me. We went to a shooting house because we knew we would not be still for very long. We did lots of whispering about how beautiful the sun was coming up over the hill to the east and about what kind of birds we were watching. </div>

After about an hour she laid over on me and went to sleep. She slept for about 30 minutes and then was ready to walk, and we did.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Her older brother went to a stand by himself for the first time. I was so proud of him walking in, in the dark and most of all watching a small buck for about 30 minutes hoping a larger one would come out. He had take a spike two years ago and is now looking to take mature deer. He is well ahead of his years in maturity.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We are so blessed and this Thanksgiving Season was a testament to this while being out in God's great creation.<br />
Oh and by the way, she did get to see a doe!</div>

We have just gotten out from under drought conditions in our part of the state. Wildlife food plots have not been planted and bush hogging has to be completed. It has been too dry for seed to germinate and the threat of wildfire from bush hogging was too great to chance it. Now the rain is coming and there is much to do.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We have had several meetings but now that is behind us we hope to get some late seed in the ground and start bush hogging the roads and fire breaks. We were not able to get our summer burn in because it was too dry.</div>

The middle of October we were able to attend the 30th anniversary of the Southeastern Farmer Of The Year in Valdosta, GA then the next day attend the Ag EXPO in Moultrie, GA. It was good to see old friends there.</div>

We attended the Alabama Landowner Conference in Prattville, where we had meetings with the Alabama Treasure Forest Association Board and the Alabama State Tree Farm Committee. We went on a tour of two forest operations highlighting their use of pine straw and wildlife resources.<br />
My grandchildren, wife, and I were featured on the new State Tree Farm banner which was an honor for us.</div>

May was a busy month dealing with things required of me by organizations I belong to. One week in May, Alabama had auditors for the Tree Farm audit which required visiting 49 Tree Farms in the state that were randomly chosen for visits to make sure Tree Farm was in compliance with the third part audit. Felicia and I started in Huntsville and helped with the North Alabama visits.</div>

Since I am the Chairperson for the Alabama Tree Farm Committee I helped transport auditors to various properties and have since had conference calls with the national Tree Farm office about this audit. Alabama had no BMP (Best Management Practices) problems. This spoke well of our state. It was good to see other Tree Farms and how they were being managed. </div>

Today we planted 20,050 more longleaf seedlings. These seedlings were planted on a tract of land we harvested in the winter of 2018. It was a mature stand of hardwood that had started to die and there were some pines mixed in the tract. We had one native longleaf pine growing on the property that we left. It was a 12" diameter tree.</div>

These guys that plant the trees are the hardest working people I have ever been around. I enjoy trying to communicate with them. Two in the crew planted longleaf for me two years ago and they were glad to see the results of their labor as they came into our property. Most of the time they don't get to see where they had planted trees in previous years and it gave them motivation to do a good job seeing the results of their previous labor.</div>

This tree is off to a good start with all of this wet weather we are having. 30 years from now this seedling will be a part of beautiful longleaf pine forest. My family will be able to walk through it and hear the special music the needles make when the breeze blows through them.</div>

As 2018 comes to a close it has been really wet. The hunting has been lousy. Roads are too wet to travel and prescribed burning is nearly at a stand still. I did get one of the main roads worked last week and just over a week ago we got a burn in under 12 year old longleaf pines. </div>

I recently completed my term as President of the Alabama Treasure Forest Association. I conducted the business at our final state business meeting for 2018 in Pratville at the Alabama Landowners Conference. This was such an honor for me to be in a line of great presidents that have guided our organization down through the years. Our next president, Gary Cole, will be a great president for our organization. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
People usually serve two annual terms in this position but I agreed to serve only one because in November I became the State Chairman for the Alabama Tree Farm Committee. I had already made this commitment to Tree Farm early and had been serving as vice-chair for the past four years.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These are two great organizations for forest landowners having different objectives but both do great work for those they represent!</div>

Well, today we completed the 2018 Classroom in the Forest sponsored by the Clay County Forestry Planning Committee/Treasure Forest. This program is offered to all fifth graders in Clay County. Part of the counties students went thru the program Wednesday and the other part on Thursday. We offer our property to educate the students on environmental education.</div>

We met with Congressman Rogers yesterday to discuss the Farm Bill and its impact on Rural America here in Clay County. It is so important to all rural people in ways we have not thought of.<br />
We looked and talked about how the bill helps keep our water safe and pure; how it effects jobs in our community; and how wildlife habitat is protected.Dewberry Lands, LLChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01233315997918601875noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1574079207789227012.post-12358426066706219622018-09-15T10:21:00.000-05:002018-09-15T10:21:31.049-05:00Fall Plantings<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I worked on fall plantings for wildlife yesterday. It was good to have my dad, 81, helping me! I love to hear him talk about where the deer will come from to these fields and stories about deer he has taken on our property through the years. We have this transmission line across the property and we try to use it to our advantage.</div>
